I did check that at least m4-1.4.4 states EOF in string, but not exactly in that formatting, while m4-1.4.6 spells it out as "end of file in string". Also, as a note of portability, POSIX says changequote is only portable for delimiters up to 5 bytes in length (and, for example, Solaris m4 does not accept your example). - -- Don't work too hard, make some time for fun as well!
