And this followup, when I noticed some odd TABs scattered in comments.
For branch-1.4, I'm keeping the comment style as-is.  But I noticed that
on the master branch, they were converted to a style more consistent with
other GNU projects in commit 0a7af6da1, 2001-08-19, so I will also convert
them in branch-1.6 (where the comment style was already half-and-half due
to all my improvements for speeding up recursion).
