       --debug-level=LEVEL
              set Mailutils debugging level

We look at the INFO page again:


   Valid debug levels are: ...

prot
     Displays network protocol interaction, where applicable.

We try it

mail.mailutils: unknown category: prot

So it should say "unknown debug level: prot"
