And thank you for the explanations as well as for the fix!!!

I've eventually compiled upstream mailutils and confirm that now
the emails are loaded as expected.
(I appreciate the suggestion to send a bootstrapped tarball - that
would be very handy if I hadn't had some free time to play around.)
