Follow-up Comment #1:

This is marked as a doc bug, but I am not sure what, if any, doc changes to
GNU Make are desired in response to this since the issue is in the Linux
kernel build system.

The workaround here is very useful to know, but doesn't seem actionable by us
so I'm closing this.
