Hi,

I have tried what you have suggested by modifying src/function.c and that
didn't help. It is still just as slow. I think that this issue is something
else.

We don't export any recursively expanded variables. Every variable that is set
as part of a $(shell ...) call is done via simple expansion. I wasn't able to
find any variables that were re-querying the shell over and over again.

Are there any other changes that went into 4.4 that could have caused such a
performance regression?
