Did you try my debugging recommendations?  What were the results?  You say you
weren't able to find any variables, but was that a result of looking at the
makefiles, where things could be missed, or was it a result of examining the
output of *make -d*, which is definitive?

I don't think it's necessary to resort to bisect, yet.  Building GNU Make from
Git will require installing a bunch of autotools like autoconf, automake, etc.
plus other things like gettext.  Maybe that's easy for you, maybe not.
