Just autoconf would have sufficed; autoreconf should also work, but it's
overkill, and (for me) takes about ten times longer.

Personally, I find it more convenient to put build/ directly under
${top_srcdir}, (/usr/src/src/mingw-dist/master/build/ in your case).
That way I can run "hg stat", "hg diff", "hg ci", and even "hg push",
without continually changing directory, but your arrangement should also
work. In this case "--prefix" is unnecessary, because there are no
"install" rules.
