I have a test makefile for the backslash and quote situations which
represent problems in the released version of MinGW gnu make.  I
tested it with my make fix and yours and got the same results: all
work correctly with either fix.

I think considering we independently came up with almost exactly the
same changes, and any differences can be accounted for in acceptable
ways, this is on the right track.

If anyone wants a copy of my fixed sub_proc.c, it has a short README
with it explaining everything I did and the reasons.
