46 MB isn't large.
Are the files saved on a network share? Or a mapped drive?
Does in make a difference if you (temporarily) de-activate your anti-virus
software and/or search indexer? Would it be possible to exclude the
directories where you write these files from the virus scanner and search
indexer?
Currently, the rename loop repeats up to 10 times with a pause of 5 ms between
iterations. If there are still processes that hold a lock on the
.saving_in_progress file (or the target if there already is a file with that
name) after these >50 ms, the renaming fails.
We could potentially increase the duration of the pause or the number of
attempts even further. But at some point that would slow down other
work-loads.
