Follow-up Comment #2:
noting in Octave 11.0.93 (hg id: git:a099845450) the orginial behavior can not
be replicated. the M(2,2)=0 statement results in a non-diagonal matrix, so
the expected warning occurs.
unless a similar example exhibiting the problem can be found with an actual
diagonal matrix, this report can probably be closed.
