Thought about it some more, I think the temp buffer is to handle swapping and
type promotion. MAT-files perform compression of numeric data if theres no
data loss (e.g. if array is actually double but contains numeric values it
could be written as integer type). I believe we can avoid the temp buffer if
there's no compression and no swap. Might be good to run it by JWE once
