I have no opinion there.  Your call  :-)
A function call implies extra overhead, but I can't judge if that would matter
in imhist.m

For packages it's very often inconvenient if in core Octave things like
argument order change, as packages should work over a span of Octave releases.
 In the case of colorbar() there's even no deprecation period involved AFAIU.
Code constructs like in comment #9 usually get to be unavoidable then.
