Probably MATLAB did this first ss conversion. 

I was thinking that the frequency responses were obtained without the use of
TF models (polynomials) in order to avoid numerical problems.

However, this example shows that the in octave we have to force it. 

It would be interesting a warning about it when the system is described by
transfer functions.

About the other issue with the save command I found very strange all the
structures and cells created by the octave only to save a vector. I don't
remember if this behavior was presented in previous versions.
