FTR: 

1. It is easily fixed (a three line change per my attachment  -what could
possibly go wrong? ;->)


2. The pain of this not working is not simply a requirement to compress the
dir before install; it is the *removal of the tmp dir later*, which contains
the built source etc in it's 'pre-copy to install dir' state . I went looking
for a way to suppress that, and concluded it was broken but was a trivial
fix.
