Follow-up Comment #1:
The Octave coding guidelines specify that tabs should never be used for
indentation because there is no consistency for what the value of a tabstop
should be. All of Octave core is written with spaces for indentation so that
the result is the same across all platforms.
I don't see how this can reasonable be addressed without something cumbersome
like a user variable that specifies the expansion value of a tab.
