@jwe: Could you please have a look whether the proposed changes to the parser
look good to you?
They look reasonable to me (untested so far). But you are the clear expert
when it comes to the parser.
Fwiw, it still worked for me with Octave 9.4.0, but leads to a deadlock in
Octave 10.1.0.
