The (a?) discussion about which JRE/JDK is required for Octave is in bug
#68282.

It emerges that Java 1.8 is overall too old; as I wrote below, some upstream
spreadsheet I/O SW may require newer Java as well, irrespective of whether
Octave itself will do fine with it.

I've added a warning that for Octave 11+ at least Java 1.9 is required, here:

There's no hard return with "Java not supported" for Octave 11+ with Java <=
1.9, as for some users it may still work; but at least they're warned now.
