This all sounds clear but unfortunately it is offputting to newcomers. 
Wouldn't it be better if write/1 also checked for cyclic terms?

Yes, that'd be more expensive but the expense would be worth it for the 
ordinary user. Perhaps there could be a way for an experienced user to 
turn it off in applications where write/1 performance is that much of an 
issue
