Condense print through screen

Hi there
How do i get the printer escape codes to go through screen i am printing 
to a 40 col printer through screen and it does not go into 16cpi and 
when kicking a cash draw it does not pass the esc5i and esc4i escape 
codes through to kick a cash draw.
what can i do
