Does '-r' remove the garbage? I've seen "half terminal: behavior before. It
has to do with termcap. Try using the 'resize' command, then your command
and less -r. The garbage without '-r' is probably also then related to some
missing termcap. Other possibility is your locale on one machine is not
available on another.
