Inverse video rendering as italic?

Hey there folks,

On a system which has otherwise not changed, I'm noticing that in alpine, 
the former inverted colors status bar and menu options have become italic 
when running under screen (they remain inverse when not).

My terminal type is simply "screen" and this is on a BSD system that uses 
classic termcap.

I'm sshing in from a mac and this happens with both terminal.app and 
iterm, when running under a new screen.

Note that right now, the lists.gnu.org url seems to be down, but there's 
no mention of this change in the release notes.

I can post my termcap if it helps, but it likely hasn't changed.
