  (1) stop your bash from sourcing the bash_profile from the bashrc.
  (2) stop screen from starting a login shell.

this sounds that we would have to guess your *shell* setup.
so - is this really a screen problem?

"yes".  read "man screen", section "COMMAND-LINE OPTIONS".

is this set correctly?  just wodnering.
if you don't want a CC then use the command
"subscribe gnu-screen@" in your muttrc.
and upgrade to mutt 1.4.1 or 1.5.4]
