The screen manpage lists all the escape codes processed by screen, and
it looks like there is a way to pass a string unmolested through screen
to the outer terminal:
ESC P (A) Device Control String. Outputs a string
directly to the host terminal without inter-
pretation.
ESC \ (A) String Terminator
So, if you can get your shell to send ESC P before, and ESC \ after
that Emacs escape code, you should be all set.
