Yes, I understand that, but that doesn't do what I'm trying to
accomplish, unless I'm bungling it.  Let's say I start an Xterm session
on machine1.  My .bashrc on machine1 starts screen.  Then I ssh to
machine2.  My .bashrc on machine2 also starts screen.  If I want to
detach my screen from machine2 (so that it shows up as a detached screen
whenever I ssh back into it), "ctrl-a a d" doesn't do this.  All it
does is print "d".  I know that I can just detach the screen on
machine1, but I'm detaching the local session.  So, if I reboot
machine1, I lose this session and if I ssh into machine2 from another
session, this screen doesn't show up.

This gives me "There is no screen to be detached."  However, if I wasn't
already running screen on machine1, then I think this would work as you
are describing.  I take full responsibility for any confusion, I'm sure
I'm not describing this correctly.
