(I just noticed that my mailer stripped out the control characters in
my message, so here it is again, sorry...)

Unless I'm misunderstanding, have you tried setting the escape
character on one box to ctrl-\?  That way no matter which screen is
the "outer" screen, ctrl-a controls the screen on box A and ctrl-\
controls the screen on box B.

Like so:

escape \
