Actually, this works for me - so ill be a bit more verbose:

500,pts/7,0,[home/julius]$ ls -l `tty`
crw--w----    1 julius   tty      136,   7 2004-03-19 01:51 /dev/pts/7
501,pts/7,0,[home/julius]$ su -c screen
Password: 

[Now i have a console end can type something ... ^D]

[screen is terminating]
502,pts/7,0,[home/julius]$ su - -c screen
Password: 

[same thing as above]

[screen is terminating]
503,pts/7,0,[home/julius]$ dpkg -l screen | grep ^ii
ii  screen         4.0.2-2        a terminal multiplexor with VT100/ANSI

...but i dont know why this works for me but not for you... odd, huh?
