I get the same error when trying this *in a screen session*:

#---------------------------------------------------------------------
$ screen -ls
There is a screen on:
        400.pts-0.tristor       (Attached)
1 Socket in /var/run/screen/S-georg.

$ su -c screen
Password:
/var/run/screen/S-root/400.pts-0.tristor: No such file or directory
#---------------------------------------------------------------------

"su -c 'screen -m'" helps here.
