One reason is that the patch doesn't fully fix the reattach problem. 
After applying the patch (that creates extra files to emulate socket
permissions), reattaching *usually* works from a local console window.
 But if you are ssh-ing into the machine, it works much less often. 
You have to kill the reattach process and keep trying to reattach
(maybe from different ssh windows) until it finally works.  It appears
that no one knows what causes this problem.  I am going to try to
debug the problem, at least to find out exactly where in the code it
hangs.
