How to get the value of a screen setting?

Hello!

How can a (bash) shell script determine the current value of a screen setting
(e.g. vbell)?

P.S. Please CC me in your replies.  I have not been able to figure out
how to switch my mailing list settings so that I get individual
postings instead of a digest, and the digests show up very infrequently.
