This is just because the Emacs developers chose to include 2+ mailclients and 2+ irc clients into the standard distribution. That is no must, I think. I hope that having screen scriptable will lead to a lot of cool scripts being published and shared, but the screen distribution can still be kept at a minimum. Hannes
