incorrect DAte---Y2K issue

It has recently come to my attention while compiling python that my 
computer's clock was reset somehow.The date read 1-1-1903.This was a few 
days ago.I believe that the time() routines have not accounted for four 
digit years and that linux, by default assumed year 1903 instead of 2003.(Of 
course, by doing this, any RPM package is WAY into the future as the 
computer doesn't exist yet.)I've reset the date, but how do i reset the time 
(within the shell)?I could have done this from within KDE 3, however, i'd 
like to learn to do it from the command shell.The man pages do not help on 
this matter, only on setting the date. 

I'm sure i'm not the only one with this bug. 

For reference: 

PPC architecture (2001 iMac running YDL-Yellow dog linux)
(rough equivelent of Red Hat for x86 systems)
192 MB ram
20 gb hd
USB mass storage support disabled as per distribution of CD.
