command date, German version

Hello,

the GNU command date offers the -R option for compatibility to
rfc-822.  However, the output is in German language as
"Mit" for Wednesday and "Mai" for "May".
As far as I know, rfc-822 does not foresee other than english
abbreviations (or did I miss any update of the standard?):

Accordingly, many programms crash when they are fed by the
"date -R" output of the German version.
Can you simply make an rfc-822 of the output in the German
version, too? Or perhaps a swich "-e" to get english output?
