Question about split's -b option

Why does the split command's -b option only allow bytes, kilobytes, and
megabytes? The support function that it calls to translate such things
supports much more than that, but split calls it in such a way to
explicitly limit it to those three choices. I assume this is
intentional, and I'd be curious to know why. Thanks.
