sort

I have been having a problem with sort in textutils 2.0.21 under
RedHat 8.0 i386.
It seems only to be sorting on non-blank characters.
I attach a sample file that has been sorted without options.

Solaris 5.9 places "A1      88 04" before "A187YWJ 11 02"
