tail of a large file

I don't know whether this is a known problem/limitation, or 
even whether these utilities are still supported, but at any 
rate:  I'm find `tail' fails on large files on my Win2000 
machine, although `head' works .   The threshhold seems to be 
about 2gig filesize

It returns: `tail: [filename]: Invalid argument'

`tail --help' doesn't show a version number for the utility, 
but I downloaded about six months ago
