[VCDImager] VCDImager SVCD's are colourless

Hi,

I'm using VCDImager 0.7.21cvs but the same problem ocurred on 0.7.14. It
is the following:

I have created a pretty standard SVCD MPEG (no RIFF): 480x576@25fps,
224kbit/sec mp2 stereo sound, ~2200kbit/sec MPEG-2 video. The file is
400M, created by mencoder.
I attempted to create a SVCD from this one file:

vcdimager -t svcd SVCD.MPEG

Then burnt it using cdrdao. The resulting SVCD plays back fine in
MPlayer, but it doesn't in my modern, stand-alone DVD player (Sony
SLV-D930) where everything is fine except for the image: it keeps being
played in black and white only!

After having tampered for ages with the actual .mpeg, I tried burning it
in Windows, in Nero. Behold, the resulting SVCD plays in colour! I can
uncheck "Create compliant SVCD", I can make an mpegav dir instead of
mpeg2, I can use ENTRIES.SVD instead of ENTRIES.VCD, SVCD's burnt by
Nero play back fine in my DVD player...

Then I tried adding some flags to the vcdimager line,
--broken-svcd-mode, --sector-2336, --update-scan-offsets, none of those
changes the fact that vcdimager created SVCD's playback in b/w. I tried
adding a segment directory too (Nero does that, though it's empty), no luck.

To me there's nothing fishy about vcdimager's output either:

------------------------------

I think vcdimager 0.7.14 used to tell me the resolution too, and that it
was burning a PAL SVCD. Using -v doesn't result in more verbose output.
Apparantly, no scan information is found, but I read VCDImager added
that itself? Perhaps this is where it differs from Nero. I've tried
finding notable differences between nero and vcdimager SVCD's, and have
found some though they don't mean much to me. The Nero avseq01.mpg files
are slightly larger (about 120Kbytes). Now I'm going to paste the output
of vcddebug, run with both SVCD's. To me it seems as if Nero includes
more information about the data on the SVCD, for example in INFO.SVD
Nero fills in more things.

Thanks for anyone willing to spend some time on this problem, perhaps it
is a common one but I don't get that impression when Googling. Playback
in b/w is often related to PAL/NTSC issues, but I don't think that's the
case here (seeing how vcdimager 0.7.14 actually mentioned burning a PAL
file).

Happy Holidays,
