Well, I have had little involvement with the GTK effort so far,
but I am sure Arun means gtk-xt branch here.
The older gtk branch was a first attempt for a conversion to gtk,
but more or less stranded because too many things were not working at once,
making testing almost impossible. So Arun started a second attempt,
based on the strategy to have a more continuous transition, where both
Xt and GDK code initially existed next to each other and where both 
operational,
so the Xt code could be replaced step by step. I think this replacement has 
now
be largely completed, mostly due to the work of John Cheetham, so that
the gtk-xt branch now is entirely free of Xt code. Not all GDK code that
replaces it works flawlessly, though, and perhaps some dialogs of minor
importance not at all (although I am not completely sure of that).

I think the gtk brach now is a dead end, although it could be that some code
could still be taken from there. That is really for Arun to say.
