If you choose to use a linux distro, it really should be second nature 
to find a repository where software is up to date and add it to your 
sources list (play.deb for instance) OR compile from source and install 
it as a debian package with something like checkinstall.    Dealing with 
out-of-date software is just one of those things that comes with the 
territory.   It's not up to us to maintain linux distros.
