I tried reproducing this by hacking the psubmit.c demo to destroy the 
rendering context, then creating a new one - like your client-side log 
indicates.

It worked as expected for me.

Could you use your debugger to get more information?  The 
crCanHoldOpcode() function has several conditions that it checks.  It 
would be nice to know which one is failing.

Alternately, what happens if you simply remove the assertion from the 
GET_BUFFERED_POINTER_NO_BEGINEND_FLUSH() macro in include/cr_pack.h?
