According to
http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/Manpages/man1/ld.1.html,
apple ld supports an option `-dead_strip` which is similar to the option
`--gc-sections` used with gnu ld. Investigate the effectiveness of that
option.
