Comment(by res):

 Simplest may actually be to use STL function `std::fabs()`, which has
 overloads for `float` and `double` arguments.

 But I'm not sure if it's available on all supported compilers. If it turns
 out it isn't, we can still write our own overloaded `fabs`-like function.
