too late?  far from it.  on the one hand none of what i've programmed
is carved in stone, so refactoring can change things later on with no
problem.  on the other hand, this is just the right moment to think
about ways to solve these problems the right way, so i'm really glad
you responded by raising these issues.

i think i have to do something with the midpoint of the bar, using it
as a pivot somehow when one end is resisted by the ground.
