Gnuplot 3.7 is the first one I ever used!

I suspect that there isn't any reason why all gnuplot versions shouldn't
work on your old hardware. It's more a question of where you got the
binary and/or how you're building it. So... where did the binary you're
running come from? And I would try out simple gnuplot terminals first.
Do "set terminal dumb 80 40", and then make your plot. Does that work?
If so, try out the more complex terminals, and go from there.
