Surface plot with a 4th variable overlain using a color scale

Can gnuplot do this?  I didn't find anything relevant searching.  The system I built 5.4.1 on is currently inaccessible so I can't review the demos.

As an example use case:

Plot ground topography in 3D with an overlay of rainfall or snowpack to show the relationship between topography, wind direction and precipitation.

There are a lot of geoscience applications for such a graphics presentation.
