Dear Ethan,

I have just solved this by installing gsed and setting a symlink to sed.
It seems that Apple's version of sed is outdated. Inserting LC_ALL=C in
front of every sed command in the Makefile seems to be lot of work, so
I'm happy about my solution, although it might be a bit dirty.
