To me it's a matter of workflow. I create a new directory, based on
date and general subject (Rocky Mountain Jan 2005). I may work in
that directory for a few hours, days, or weeks, depending. It's very
nice to be able to see "only" the files in that directory - I don't
want to have to filter out my other 30,000 files all the time. I
don't think the unassigned category would help me much - doesn't that
just mean that you haven't assigned them to ANY category? I may be
assigning them to multiple categories, and it would be very annoying
to have them slip back into the big pond just because I assigned one
category.

I haven't found it easy to search by a date range either. Maybe I
have a shoot from a month ago that I haven't have time to organize
yet. Maybe I got behind and haven't organized from several shoots.
Now, I want to only show pictures from that one shoot. The only way
to separate it out would be to search by a date range. Many steps
involved, including just finding out the right date!

Plus, I think I'm just scared. Right now, with each group of pictures
organized by shoot, with a meaningful title and date, even if IM
totally crashes and I lose everything I could still recovery. Suppose
you dump all your pictures in one big directory and your system
crashes, even with the best of planning? How could you ever recover?
