I agree, and this mirrors my history as well.
However, I just had a thought - why can't the individual messages
from the forums be piped straight through to the Yahoo! Group? Sure,
replies to the message made as email to the group won't work - you'd
need to go to the forum to do that. But at least you'd have the
individual email messages and would know that there was something
interesting to read. Then people could have their own threading etc.
in their email client as normal. If each message from the forum
included a footer with the URL of the forum message, it would be
easy to click on it in the email message to open the browser right
to the forum message to be able to respond. It shouldn't be too
much to setup (I'm a Perl hacker not php so can't comment there, but
I would bet a lot that it would be easy).
