There is other software out there that allows you to receive an individual e-mail for each message posted. The e-mail contains the text of the post, as well as a link to where you can view the entire thread and post a reply. I had been under the impression the new forum software did the same. This seems to me to be a decent compromise between e-mail only and web only (or web only with digest). An example is the Picture Window Pro forum, which uses Discus software:
http://69.5.23.102/discus/messages/2/2.html?1055860884
Another is the University of British Columbia forums, such as this one:
http://www.ubcbotanicalgarden.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=38
which lets you get responses to any posts of yours, which is nearly as convenient.
In the meantime, why not leave the Yahoo! forum as the "unofficial" forum, for those who prefer e-mail, and let others migrate to the new forum. It may be that two user communities develop. Mario need only monitor one (the new one).
Just my two cents.

Hi Tom,
Nor did I want to loose the benefits of email or want to change. This new forum
is not something that happened recently. Mario has been working on this for a
long time. Since last May I kept trying to think of ways to have it both ways
and asking Mario about these ideas. Mario has looked at a wide variety of
options and selected software that is very popular and has millions of users.
I can't say for sure but it appears to me that Mario delayed launching the new
forum for months after he has chosen UBB Threads because he too wanted to
satisfy those, like me, that prefer email messages. It didn't work out that way
but that does not mean that it never will. I trust that Mario will keep looking
for solutions.
I and a few others will learn to live with the new forum in spite of not having
email. Those who did not like email but went to the Yahoo site will find the new
forum a big improvement. A few dozen IMatch users who did not visit the Yahoo
site often may now visit the new forum more often. A few dozen users who insist
on email or nothing, are out of the loop. At least for now. Such is life.
Richard
