Oh, I didn't realize the board had been discussing this. I haven't been to any
board meetings lately.

I sent that message (which I mentioned I would send) to the small team which I'm
aware has been working on it. (no replies yet, but it was just a couple of
hours ago or something) I just didn't realize others from the community were
interested.

While it's probably better to keep it small at this point, I'd be glad to copy
in anyone else who is interested.

fwiw, I agree C R's sentiments about the 3 month thing, and especially since
this is our 2nd time around.

All best,
brynn

It's my understanding that we always aim for the lightest possible touch,
especially with people who have been a part of and supported Inkscape over the
years.

The project setting up another forum under direct control of the project should
not be seen as competition for the old Inkscape forum, but a necessary step.

This should in no way reduce our sincere gratitude to the hosts of Inkscape
forum. And we do hope that they will continue to be a part of Inkscape and the
new forum if indeed they have time to continue contributing in the future when
it's more convenient for them to do so.

With this in mind, I think 3 months is plenty of notice. I believe any
contributor who steps away for that long would not be surprised that the project
continues on in their absence, which of course we must do to support our users
and community.

So with absolutely no disrespect to the Inkscape forum hosts, I believe we
should continue with our plans within the active community.

I will bring it up at the next board meeting if it's determined we need a
majority vote on it. In the meantime I'll post the concern to the board mailing
list.

Thanks to Brynn for keeping up with it, and keeping us all in the loop with
complete transparency and a compassion and patience that is truly motivating and
inspiring. :)

Just to be clear, there is no adversarial relationship between InkscapeForum and
the rest of the community. I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I think the
owner was once involved with the community. He has continued to host the site
for all these years, without complaint. Just also without input.

At this point, I think we are still hoping and waiting. It's just that I'm
wondering how long we should wait. Perhaps ironically, I was the one who
advocated for waiting longer (few months) rather than shorter (few weeks). But
it has been a few months.

I guess I should message the small team who has been working on this, and find
out if it's time to take our next steps (after deciding what those steps will
be). Your proposed solution is indeed one of those options.

All best,
brynn

We can try to talk to the InkscapeForum in the most peaceful and diplomatic way.
If he/she does not collaborate with us we can start a new forum and mention in
our site that the other one is NOT OFFICIAL forum. It can be used with no
further problems but it is not endorsed by the project.

What do you think?

Oh my! I see... so the forum we have today was created by someone outside of the
project team and became very popular. I see. Well... in this case never mind. I
don't want to disturb everyone with this then... just thought that someone
forgot to put the link to the forum since there is so much activity in there.

Let's pray for a peaceful and civilized solution soon then.

Thanks!

Indeed, InkscapeForum.com is the de facto official forum. It was removed from
the links on the Community page (a couple or 3 years ago) because it came to
light that except for spam control, there is no other significant management of
the forum (just loyal and dedicated members, helping Inkscape users, day in and
day out). In my opinion, it screams to be updated. We have no access to its
server.

The single owner/admin has twice said he will provide the forum to become
community managed. And now that the Inkscape project has it's own server, a new
forum has been installed, and is ready and waiting for him to deposit the
databases and other files. I guess we've been waiting around 4 or 5 months?

I'm not sure what we're going to do, but I guess it's probably time to address
it, and decide what "Plan B" is going to be. Just my opinion though.

Certainly if it's databases are used to start the new official forum, it will be
well-linked from the website!

All best,
brynn

Hi Guys,

I am a long time inkscape user but I just recently found the forum. Maybe it is
just me but isn't it possible for us to include the forum
(www.inkscapeforum.com) in one of the main menus of the Inkscape website? (maybe
under the option "community" of under the option "learn"?)

There such a rich wealth of knowledge and so many active discussions that I feel
like I have rediscovered this application today altogether!

What do you think?

Regards,
